Premier Li Keqiang met with United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) president Maria Fernanda Espinosa Garces at Beidaihe in Qinhuangdao, North China’s Hebei province, on Aug 8.

As a founding member of the UN and a permanent member of the UN Security Council, as well as the biggest developing country, China has always been a core supporter of the international organization, Premier Li said.

China firmly maintains the authority of the UN, supports its key role in international affairs, and is ready to take part in all kinds of activities initiated by the organization in fields, such as politics, economy, social development and peace keeping, he said.

By fulfilling its international obligations, China could contribute to world peace, global development and maintaining international order, according to Premier Li.

Since its establishment more than 70 years ago, the UN has helped over 1 billion people get out of poverty, and more and more countries are becoming prosperous, mainly due to the world moving towards globalization, multi-polarization and the multilateralism many countries have pursued.

A multilateral world is needed more now than at any time against the current backdrop, the Premier said, adding that every country should abide by purposes and principles set by the UN Charter and stick to dialogue and consultation in dealing with differences.

By observing the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO), nations should uphold and improve the free trade mechanism, and promote trade and investment facilitation, the Premier said.

In addition, he said democratic and legalized international relations should be promoted and protectionism should be opposed.

Premier Li said improvement and reform is necessary for the UN and the WTO, which should be done based on the international order established after World War II, and maintenance of the UN Charter and major principles, including free trade.

For her part, Espinosa said the UN highly values its relations with China, and China is the first country she’s visited since she was elected president of the UN General Assembly.

China plays an important role in strengthening multilateralism and supporting the UN’s work, she said.

The UN, Espinosa said, is willing to work with China and other nations to promote free trade under the framework of international law and the WTO, and the inclusive economic globalization that benefits everyone.

These efforts will help nations to cope with challenges, and promote world peace, stability, and prosperity, she said.

State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi also attended the meeting.
