Thailand, China to jointly facilitate trade, investment to oppose protectionism

BANGKOK — Thai Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak and State Councilor Wang Yong agreed that Thailand and China should oppose unilateralism and protectionism in trade together and jointly facilitate trade, investment during a bilateral meeting on Aug 24.

State Councilor Wang Yong came to Thailand to preside over the 6th Conference of China-Thailand Joint Trade Committee together with Somkid.

Wang said during the conference that the two meetings held between President Xi Jinping and Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha last year have pointed out the new direction for the development of China-Thailand relations, which both sides should follow to implement the important consensus reached by the two leaders, strengthen strategic linkage under the Belt and Road Initiative and extend the bilateral practical cooperation to wider, deeper and bigger scopes.

Somkid said Thailand attaches great importance to deepening the bilateral economic and trade cooperation with China, and is willing to learn from China in terms of development experience.

The Thai prime minister added that the Thai side wants to dock the Belt and Road Initiative with Thailand’s Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) project to facilitate the investment of Chinese enterprises to Thailand.

He also said that Thailand supports Thai enterprises to participate in the first China International Import Expo.

The two sides agreed that in current situation, both countries should have comprehensive talks on how to deepen their cooperation in investment and trade, connectivity, agriculture, science and technology, aerospace, tourism, financial and other fields.

After the conference, the two sides signed several documents to boost their cooperation in different fields.

During his visit in Thailand, State Councilor Wang also attended the Thailand-China Business Forum 2018 and will visit the EEC area.
