State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, president-elect of the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), on July 4 in Beijing.
Wang congratulated Bande on his election. He said that at present unilateralism, protectionism and hegemony are impacting and challenging the international order. Against this backdrop, it’s expected that at the General Debate of UNGA in September, a united voice calling for upholding multilateralism and strengthening the UN’s role will be heard.
China supports UNGA’s work on sustainable development, climate change, empowerment of women and youths, and safeguarding world peace, and is willing to cooperate with UNGA to achieve new progress in these important fields, said Wang.
Bande said multilateralism is necessary for the international community more than any time in the past. While appreciating China’s consistent support for UNGA, he said he will enhance cooperation with China in major fields during the new session of UNGA.
