BEIJING — Here are the latest developments on COVID-19 in China:
— The number of existing confirmed cases of COVID-19 on the Chinese mainland dropped to 260 on May 7, the lowest since Jan 20. The mainland reported no new imported cases on May 7, the first such day since Feb 28, and the total number of imported cases stood at 1,680.
— The only one new confirmed COVID-19 case reported on the Chinese mainland on May 7 was domestically transmitted in Jilin province.
— China has put in place a set of guidelines to facilitate regular prevention and control of the COVID-19 epidemic, highlighting 20 measures ranging from daily epidemic prevention at key public facilities to cross-region recognition of smartphone-based health codes.
— The State Council on May 8 issued a guideline to orderly open up public places and entertainment venues, with shopping malls, supermarkets, hotels, restaurants and other public places to be fully reopened on the premise of implementing epidemic prevention measures, while outdoor places including parks, scenic spots and sports venues will be opened through appointments and with restrictions on visitor numbers.
— Over 84,200 students in their final year of junior high school in Beijing will resume class starting from May 11 as the COVID-19 epidemic is under control. Over 13,200 teachers will also return to classrooms.
— Shanghai and southern China's Guangdong province will further lower their public health emergency responses for the COVID-19 epidemic from the second level to the third level starting May 9.
