The State Council announced its annual awards to scientists and organizations that have made great contributions to science and technology progress, economic and social development and national defense modernization, according to a circular released on Nov 3.

In the State Natural Science Awards, two achievements won first prize while the other 44 achievements won second.

Three scientific accomplishments were awarded first prize at the State Technology Invention Awards, and 58 accomplishments were awarded second.

Two achievements were awarded the special prize of the State Scientific and Technological Progress Award, 18 achievements were awarded first prize, and 137 achievements were awarded the second.

Eight foreign experts and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture were awarded the International Science and Technology Cooperation Award.

The circular urged scientists and technicians to put the interests of the nation and the people first, shoulder historical tasks and keep the core position of innovation in the overall picture of China's modernization drive.

Self-independence in science and technology should serve as a strategic support to the nation's development, it stressed, calling for scientists and technicians to make further contribution to the construction of a modern socialist country and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
