China will launch a special nationwide campaign to defuse risks of homemade buildings to protect people's lives and property, according to a circular released by the State Council on May 27.
By the end of June 2023, a thorough investigation on self-constructed buildings all around the country will be carried out, especially on buildings used to operate businesses with more than three stories, densely populated, or renovated illegally, to prevent major accidents, according to the circular.
The circular demanded efforts to thoroughly address hidden dangers. To enhance safety management, China will strictly control risks of self-constructed buildings, strengthen routine examinations, crack down on illegal activities, and set up a long-term safeguard mechanism.
On April 29, a self-constructed residential building collapsed in Central China's Hunan province, causing heavy casualties.
