China expects to see 710m air passenger trips in 2020

BEIJING — China's booming civil aviation industry is expected to see 710 million air passenger trips in 2020, up 7.6 percent from last year, according to the country's civil aviation authorities.

Air cargo volume is expected to rise 1.3 percent to 7.63 million metric tons, according to the Civil Aviation Administration of China.

In 2020, the total air transport turnover of China's civil aviation is expected to reach 139 billion ton-km.

China remained the world's second-largest civil aviation market in 2019, with the sector's revenue up 5.4 percent to 1.06 trillion yuan (about $155 billion).

China's civil aviation industry maintained high-speed development over the past decades alongside the country's economic growth and continuous opening-up.

The sector has been blessed with strengthened servicing capacity and global competence. In 2019, air traffic contributed 32.8 percent of passenger turnover in the country's comprehensive transport system, according to the CAAC.

In 2019, China's civil aviation industry operated 660 million passenger trips and 7.52 million tons of air cargo and mail, up 7.9 percent and 1.9 percent, respectively.

China is expected to become the world's largest by the mid-2020s, according to forecasts by the International Air Transport Association.
