BEIJING — China has built a new bird protection mechanism over recent years with remarkable results, the country's forestry authority said on April 2.
China is home to 1,445 species of birds, accounting for about one-sixth of the total number in the world, according to the National Forestry and Grassland Administration.
The country has taken a slew of measures to build natural reserves and launch protection projects for endangered birds, aiming to enhance protection for bird habitats and resting places during migrations and conserve bird populations.
To ensure safe migration for migratory birds, earlier this year the administration urged forestry departments at all levels to strengthen the monitoring of bird population dynamics, disease prevention and control, and early warning systems.
In addition to government efforts, incomplete statistics showed that a total of 33,000 volunteers across the country have participated in protecting migratory birds so far, the administration said.
