Updated: July 1, 2022 13:42 Xinhua

BEIJING — China's meteorological authority on July 1 renewed a yellow alert for Chaba, the third typhoon of the year, as it moves closer to southern China.

The typhoon, which was observed on waters 250 km northeast of Yongxing Island in Hainan's Sansha city at 5 am, will move northwestward at a speed of 15 to 20 km per hour, with slowly increased intensity, the National Meteorological Center said in a statement.

Chaba is expected to make landfall in coastal areas of Hainan or Guangdong between afternoon and evening on July 2.

Affected by the typhoon, some areas in Hainan, Guangdong and Fujian provinces and Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region will see heavy rainfalls and strong winds over the coming 24 hours.

The center noted that ships and boats should take shelter at harbors while advising the relevant areas to take measures to prevent torrential floods and geological disasters.

China has a four-tier color-coded weather warning system, with red representing the most severe, followed by orange, yellow and blue.
