Premier supports boosting cooperation with Myanmar

Premier Li Keqiang on May 16 met with Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, who attended the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation held in Beijing on May 14-15.

He said that China and Myanmar are friendly neighbors, and the country always has friendly policies toward Myanmar. China is willing to align development strategies, enhance high-level contacts, mutually beneficial cooperation and people-to-people and cultural exchanges with Myanmar to bring more benefits to people of the two countries, said Premier Li.

He called on the two sides to steadily promote cooperation on special economic zones, oil and gas pipelines and ports, and properly deal with the Myitsone Dam project.

Premier Li also expressed the hope for a cease-fire in northern Myanmar to ensure security and stability in border areas between China and Myanmar. China supports Myanmar in hosting the second meeting of the 21st Century Panglong Peace Conference, and is willing to play a constructive role in promoting the peace process in Myanmar.

Aung San Suu Kyi said friendship between China and Myanmar has a long tradition. Seeing China as a friend of Myanmar, she said her country attaches great importance to the development of ties with China, and holds high expectations for bilateral cooperation and is willing to further strengthen economic and trade cooperation as well as people-to-people and cultural exchanges, she said.

She thanked China’s support and help in promoting the peace process in her country, and welcomed China’s further efforts in this aspect.

After the meeting, they witnessed the signing of bilateral cooperation documents in areas such as connection of development strategies, economy, technology, healthcare, and cultural relics preservation.
