Premier Li interacts with UN

China will firmly support the United Nations in dealing with global threats and challenges and safeguarding the postwar international order, Premier Li Keqiang said while meeting with Peter Thomson, president-elect of the 71st Session of the UN General Assembly.

July 8

Premier Li met with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in Beijing. The Premier said that China always works to maintain the international system centered on the United Nations and defends the purpose and principle of the UN Charter.

The government aims to help 12 million people out of poverty by boosting tourism in the next five years, Premier Li announced at the opening ceremony of the first World Conference on Tourism for Development, proposed by the Chinese government and jointly hosted with the United Nations World Tourism Organization.

Premier Li met with Mogens Lykketoft, president of the 70th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations, in Beijing. He said that as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China supports the UN to play a bigger role in international affairs.

Premier Li met with United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who attended V-Day commemorations during an official visit to China, in the Great Hall of the People. The Premier said that the UN played a significant role in maintaining world peace and promoting common development.

Premier Li met with Irina Bokova, director-general of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in Paris, and he endorsed efforts by UNESCO to boost world cultural diversity and education in developing countries.

Premier Li met Li Yong, director-general of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), at the Great Hall of the People. The Premier said China has been expanding cooperation with UNIDO, with results.

Premier Li called on China and Latin America to enhance cooperation on production capacity and people-to-people exchanges, while addressing the Santiago-based United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).

China plans to cooperate closely with Latin American and Caribbean countries on industrial capacity production, infrastructure and financing, Premier Li said during a meeting in Santiago with Alicia Barcena, executive secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).

Premier Li met with Michel Sidibe, deputy secretary-general of the United Nations and executive director of UNAIDS, and Mark Dybul, executive director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Premier Li said the Chinese government is paying close attention to preventing AIDS with more efforts and budgetary allocations, with efforts to reach the Millennium Development Goals set by the UN.
