Scientists should live a decent life with dignity
Premier Li Keqiang emphasized that a country needs a group of great scientists devoted to high technology and enjoy the drudgery of research. During a visit to the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, on May 7, he promised the government will further increase spending on basic research and ensure scientists’ remuneration matches their contributions so that they can live a decent life with dignity. Only when scientists are respected will innovation become a common practice, the Premier said.

Premier Li Keqiang emphasized that the depth of basic scientific research determines a country’s innovation vitality. During a visit to the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, on May 7, the Premier encouraged researchers to lay a solid foundation for basic research, and turn more of “Made in China” to “Created in China”to build the “edifice” of China’s core competitiveness.
Basic research should not be rushed
Premier Li Keqiang encouraged scientific researchers to have patience while conducting in-depth studies. During a visit to the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, on May 7, the Premier said a long-term mechanism of scientific evaluation should be set up to avoid “simple but quick” assessments. Some basic research often needs a long time to be recognized but history will prove their value, he said.
Old generation of scientists should be ladders for young scientists
Premier Li Keqiang praised the research team which has world-class achievements to credit and appreciated how the “experienced scientists help newcomers”. During a visit to the National Lab for Superconductivity and Lab of Electron Microscopy at the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, on May 7, the Premier said that the young scientists must emulate the pragmatic spirit of the older generations; and the older generation of scientists should willing to be ladders to create a good environment for young scientists to climb up.
